There can be no doubt that the Nintendo Wii has united families in the game playing arena, young and old can play together and compete on a level field. Not since the Sega master system has there been so much interest in a game playing console across generations, mums, dads and even grandparents can be involved in gameplaying together!
Our household of four has a Wii, a PS3, a PSP and 2 DS lite’s. The most popular is the Wii for the simple reason that we can all play together and our favourite games are the easiest to play Wii sports. Our young children regularly beat us at bowling and tennis.
Nintendo have added Wii fit which comes complete with a pressure sensitive balance board which weighs you and checks your posture, it also monitors your performance and saves the information so the next time you can improve and maybe will have lost weight. This seems to be Nintendo’s biggest selling approach as the game as already sold out in many stores, probably people wanting to lose weight for that summer holiday!
Recent studies have shown that children using Wii sports burn 60% more calories than when playing conventional console games. You have to applaud Nintendo for bringing a more active approach to game playing, but surely there can be no substitute for outside activity? I suppose times have changed and the days of letting your kids out to play have gone due to increased dangers.

Are we then destined to become a stay at home nation, too scared to let our children out? Has the console manufacturer got us where he wants us? I hope not, kids need to go outside, climb trees, build dens, play football, ride bikes and most of all interact with other kids.
We just may end up a race of stay at home stiffs who are too scared to venture outside and have a conversation with another human being!
